Bilirubin is a byproduct in the blood caused by the breakdown of blood cells. It is usually processed by the liver and removed from the body. Tessa's liver is not yet keeping up so she has been under light therapy for the past few days to help break down bilirubin. Her levels are still high so she will remain under light therapy for a few additional days. The higher levels are probably caused by the extensive bruising she experienced during delivery.
